The Beach
Zeebrugge, known for having the largest beach on the Belgian coast, is an ideal place for kitesurfing and wingfoiling. The vast sandy surface offers plenty of space for water sports enthusiasts to practice their sports. In recent years, new dunes have formed in the middle of the beach. These dunes get submerged during spring tides, creating a unique experience.
Zoning and Safety
During the high season, from mid-June to the end of September, Zeebrugge beach is divided into a water sports zone and a swimming zone, with a buffer zone in between. Water sports enthusiasts must strictly adhere to this division to avoid collisions with swimmers. Despite the absence of breakwaters or other obstacles in the water, caution is advised with west winds to avoid hitting the harbor wall.
Respect the beach lifeguards and stay out of their zone. The surf club and the beach rescue service work together very effectively. Always follow the instructions of the rescue services.
Land and Launch Zone
A land and launch zone is provided for kite surfers, right in front of the surf club. This ensures an organized and safe start and landing. Other parts of the beach are not suitable for launching kites.
Surf Club, Membership, and Facilities
In Belgium, it is mandatory to be a member of a surf club if you want to practice water sports at sea. You can become a member for a whole year, or even just for one day at a daily rate of 25 euros. As a member, you have access to a range of facilities, including a members' area, compressor, changing rooms, lockers, and showers. Additionally, rescue costs are included in the (daily) membership.
Beginners wear a red lycra on the water, which can be obtained at the surf club.
The surf club provides a red and green flag. A green flag indicates that there is surveillance and rescue service available from the surf club. A red flag means water sports are at your own risk.
The surf club is open every day from June to the end of September. During the winter period, the surf club is only open on weekends. More information can be found on the surf club's website.
Conditions, Wind, and Tides
Zeebrugge is blessed with the largest kitesurfing and wingfoiling zone on the Belgian coast. With a northeast wind, the conditions are optimal for wingfoiling and wave riding, as the waves come to life. With a west wind direction, it can be challenging to get through the surf with a wingfoil set. Water sports are allowed with wind directions ranging from 235° to 55°; offshore winds are not allowed for water sports in Belgium.
In summer, the temperature ranges between 20 and 30°C, and the sea water temperature is around 20°C. In winter, the temperature ranges between 0 and 15°C, and the water temperature is around 10°C. A wetsuit is recommended throughout the year.
Zeebrugge experiences significant differences between high and low tide. At low tide, you'll need to walk quite a distance from the surf club to the waterline (+/- 1 km). In Belgium, you are allowed to go a maximum of 2 nautical miles out to sea from the low-water line.
Parking
Free parking is available from October to early June. During the high season, from June to the end of September, parking is available in Zeebrugge itself with the use of a blue parking disc. With this disc, you can park for free for up to 4 hours.

Kitesurf Community
Zeebrugge has a strong kitesurf, wing, and windsurf community. Zeebrugge beach is frequented by water sports enthusiasts both in winter and summer.
Lessons and Rentals
If you want to learn kitesurfing or wingfoiling, then Club North By Icarus in Zeebrugge is the place to be. Club North By Icarus is the largest kite and wingfoil school on the Belgian coast, with ten certified instructors available daily to provide lessons.

If you are specifically looking for surf and windsurf lessons, you can head to the Oneill Beachclub in Blankenberge (2km west of Zeebrugge). Equipment rental is also available there.
